Talk Tuesday-It Is More Blessed To Give Than To Receive

I met a friend who I had not seen in many years, for coffee. As we were reminiscing, she reminded me of an important lesson from the Lord:

"And remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.' "Acts 20:35

As I listened to my friend speak, I pondered this truth. I am selfish by nature. It is my natural, human inclination to look out for myself first before others. By worldly standards, this is the acceptable norm. We live in what I like to call, the 'i-Culture.' The message Jesus teaches is so contrary to that which the world espouses. I have heard this many times over, 'I must love myself first in order to love others.' I beg to differ. I would reword this, 'In order to love others, I must first receive the love of Christ into my own heart.' That love which came through death and sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ, sets us free to love others in a selfless manner. I have met Christians who have given out of their lack, served in their weariness, prayed for others while in the throes of their own pain, loved those who despised them and blessed those who cursed them. This is a testimony to God's wisdom, for when we give that seed is multiplied tenfold.

"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. " Luke 6:38

Talk Tuesday-When God Uses Our Failures

I remember one day I was sitting around at an outing with colleagues from work. Someone brought up the issue of psychic activities (i.e. Horoscope, tarot cards, palm reading), and I simply said that I did not believe nor practise that. What I did NOT do, was explain why. That was a really weird moment for me because I knew I should have explained myself and I didn't. I am not in the habit of hiding away my faith, my love for Christ or my belief in His Word. Yet I did not speak up, even when questioned why. I remember walking away, surprised at myself.

Peter's first encounter with Jesus is a memorable one: “Now when Jesus looked at him, He said, 'You are Simon the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas' (which is translated, A Stone)” John 1:42. Simon Peter answers the call, and leaves all to follow Christ. One day, Jesus asks his disciples, “'But who do you say that I am?' Simon Peter answered and said, 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.' Jesus answered and said to him, 'Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter and on this rock I will build My church and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it” Matthew 16:15-18.
What a pivotal moment this must have been for Peter! Yet, soon afterwards, Jesus warns Peter:

“And the Lord said, 'Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith would not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.'” Luke 22:31-32

“Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times.” John 13:38

Peter ardently rejects the idea that he would ever deny Jesus. Yet, he does...three times. Knowing that Peter would before hand, Jesus intercedes on his behalf. He also does not give up on Peter. I have learned that Jesus sees our hearts, knows our weakness and prays for us. When we have fallen, we must remember to GET BACK UP! He is waiting to restore us.

John Chapter 21:15, Jesus says to Peter three times, “'Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?' He said to Him, 'Yes, Lord; You know that I love you.' He said to him, 'Feed my lambs.'” Now, Jesus knows that Peter is up to the task.

How do you think that God used Peter's failure to prepare him for future ministry? Have you ever failed the Lord, yet seen the mercy of God come through in a restorative and redemptive way? Please click on the comments link below to share. I think I'll be the first to respond :-) Be blessed as we strengthen one another in Christ Jesus.

Movie Monday- How Can I Keep From Singing? Chris Tomlin

Talk Tuesday - Bear Fruit With Patience

"A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the wayside; and it was trampled down, and the birds of the air devoured it.
Some fell on rock; and as soon as it sprang up, it withered away because it lacked moisture.
And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up and choked it.
But others fell on good ground, sprang up, and yielded a crop a hundredfold." Luke 8:5-8

When asked about this parable, Jesus explained that the seed is the word of GOD. Those by the wayside hear, but the devil comes and takes the word out of their hearts. The ones by the rock are those who receive the word with joy but they have no root. They believe only for a while and then fall away in a time of temptation. The seed which fell among the thorns are those who hear the word of God, but they are choked by the cares, riches and pleasures of this world.

"But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience." Luke 8:15

After having a particularly difficult week physically, I sat alone at midnight pondering this parable. I felt discouraged and listless. Then I heard the words of a song by Chris Tomlin, 'How can I keep from singing your praise, how can I ever say enough, how amazing is Your love...I can sing in the troubled times and sing when I win. I can sing when I lose my step and fall down again. I can sing cause You pick me up, sing cause You're there. I can sing cause You hear me Lord, when I call to You in prayer.'
Sometimes we feel overwhelmed, discouraged and forgotten. We are waiting, and waiting...and waiting. GOD has a plan. He is moulding us, pruning our branches and making us even more fruitful. I picked up my guitar that night and began to sing the words of the song, How Can I Keep From Singing. My pride hurts, my body hurts and my heart hurts but I remind myself to wait upon the Lord so that I, too, may bear fruit with patience. Oh, and remember to approach the throne of grace with confidence.

"Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need." Hebrews 4:14-16
