Talk Tuesday - Should we teach our children about Santa Claus?


If you don't know by now Santa isn't real, but to kids he is the greats person on earth this time of the year. As Christians should we teach our children about Santa Claus? I spoke to one Christian father and he said that he was not teaching his kids about Santa. He did not even go to the Santa parade. If you have kids did you tell them about Santa? If you don't have kids are you going to tell them about Santa? What are you going to teach your kids about Christmas?

Why would you lie to your kids? Tell them Santa is a fairy tale just like cinderella, but at one time there was a good man named St. Nickolous. Christmas is about Christ coming to the earth. Tell them the real truth. Last year when I was in Thailand I told my kids about baby Jesus. After hearing the story once everyday they wanted me to tell them about the truth - Jesus. Its ok for kids to pretend and have an imagination about Santa, but don't lie to them by telling that he's real.

Weird!...I just had this conversation w/ my friends yesterday. (None of us have kids yet). All of them said they would have no problem reconciling Christianity & Santa Clause, and going along w/ the milk and cookies/chimney thing & complying w/ the extra gift. I'm not so sure. It would be tough though - because 'Santa' is everywhere - the malls, at school, on TV. I had read an article recently that said the best thing to do might be to teach your kids the difference between 'pretend'and 'real'...like mommy and daddy are real; Jesus is real; Kermit, Cinderella and Santa are 'pretend'.

May be teaching them where "Santa Claus" originated from would be beneficial to kids in some respect, i.e. Saint Nicholas who was a Christian in his time would go around giving gifts to the poor to bless them. Then the "Saint Nicholas" eventually merged to this "Santa Claus" (not sure how this happens...is it a spanish thing with the "Santa" = "Saint" thing...Natasha, help me out!). Ultimately, explaining that the fantasy character we all hear about is just that - a fantasy - is important.

I did not think that telling the kids about Santa was a lie. WOW!!! Makes you think. I was thinking about all the other kids that know about Santa and was wondering how my kid would react to this. I wasn't going to give them a gift from Santa but was wondering how to address the subject. Thanks for all the comments.
